It was a pleasure to welcome Lieutenant General Richard Nugee CB CVO CBE, who was the Chief of Defence People in the MOD but since January he has been the first Defence lead for Climate Change and Sustainability, to come and speak to D Group members. General Nugee laid out very succinctly the challenge that faces the MOD. It produces 50% of HMG’s emissions, generating more than 2.5 million tons of carbon a year. The MOD has been set the target of achieving Net Carbon Zero by 2050 and has put in place a plan to deliver over three Epochs of 5, 10 and 15 years, with £42 billion being budgeted for. The first Epoch will concentrate very much on the estate, the second horizon scanning, and the third executing.
