Event details
Sir Mark Rowley QPM is Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, and is a determined police reformer, as well as one of the UK’s leading figures in national security, having been knighted for an “exceptional contribution to national security at a time of unprecedented threat and for personally providing reassuring national leadership through the attacks of 2017.”
Appointed Commissioner in 2022, he returned to lead the Met through a major programme of renewal focused on More Trust, Less Crime and High Standards.
Under his leadership, the Met has strengthened its foundations through improved training, modernised technology, and significant investment in neighbourhood policing and public protection, whilst leading significant changes to professional standards - mobilising the good majority to produce high standards, ensuring the organisation is better equipped to uphold integrity, and removing over 1,500 unacceptable officers and staff from the Met in three years.
These reforms are delivering for London’s communities: less crime, major reductions in knife crime and injury violence, and the lowest homicide rate London has ever seen.
Drawing on his background in UK Counter Terrorism Policing, Sir Mark has pioneered innovative, data driven approaches to identifying and tackling the highest risk predatory men. Tackling violence against women and girls has been strengthened with increased skills and resources, resulting in more than double the number of cases solved and growing confidence among victims to report.
The streets are also getting safer, with significant reductions in theft, robbery, burglary and vehicle crime, as the Met arrests over 1,000 more offenders per month. The result of all this is greater trust in the Met.
Sir Mark’s policing career spans more than 30 years, including senior roles in West Midlands Police, the National Criminal Intelligence Service, and Surrey Police, where he served as Chief Constable. He joined the Met in 2011 and later led the UK’s national counter terrorism response, earning a knighthood in 2018 for his contribution to national security.
After four years in the private sector working on specialist security and technology projects, Sir Mark returned to policing in 2022 to lead the Met’s transformation. He remains committed to building a modern, trusted police service for London.
